The Production
HD Sound & Lighting had the pleasure of working with Vocal Footprint on their 2025 production, Oz the Musical, staged at Callington Town Hall.
The production brought together a talented young cast aged between 6 and 16, supported by an adult choir singing alongside the children. With such a strong focus on vocals, music and performance, sound played a particularly important role in bringing the production together.
Our involvement covered sound, lighting and projection, with approximately 65 hours of work going into the production across preparation, setup, rehearsals, technical work and the performance itself.
What We Provided
Our work on Oz the Musical included:
- Sound design and setup
- Live sound operation
- Microphone setup and management
- Audio mixing for cast, music and choir
- PA system provision
- Lighting design
- Lighting programming and operation
- Projection setup and operation
- Technical rehearsals and adjustments
- Special effects, including snow and atmospheric fog
- General theatre and event technical support
- Equipment supply, installation and removal
Sound & Vocals
With a young cast, an adult choir and a production featuring a significant amount of singing, achieving clear and balanced vocals was one of the most important technical aspects of the show.
A full sound system was assembled using a combination of equipment already available at Callington Town Hall and equipment supplied by HD Sound & Lighting.
Our own equipment included microphones, a PA system, audio mixing equipment and the additional equipment required to manage the sound throughout the production.
The aim was not simply to make everything louder, but to create a balanced mix that allowed the individual performers, group vocals, choir and music to work together while remaining clear for the audience.
Lighting & Projection
Alongside sound, we provided our own lighting equipment to supplement the facilities already available within the Town Hall.
Lighting was designed and programmed to support the different scenes, musical numbers and atmosphere of the production, helping transform the hall into the various environments required by the story.
Projection was also incorporated into the production, adding another visual element and allowing lighting, sound and projected content to work together as part of the overall design.
Special Effects
The production also gave us the opportunity to bring in some additional theatrical effects. Our equipment included both a fog machine and snow machine, adding atmosphere and a little extra theatrical magic to the performance.
These effects were incorporated alongside the lighting and sound rather than being treated as separate elements, helping create some memorable moments for both the cast and audience.
Around 65 Hours Behind the Scenes
Productions like this involve considerably more work than simply arriving on the day and switching on the equipment.Across planning, equipment preparation, installation, programming, rehearsals, adjustments, operation and packing everything away afterwards, we spent approximately 65 hours working on the production.
A large proportion of this time was spent making adjustments as the show developed, balancing vocals, refining lighting cues and ensuring the different technical elements worked smoothly with the performers.
The Performance
The cast and crew worked incredibly hard in the run-up to the production and throughout the performance day itself. All that work paid off, with Oz the Musical playing to a packed Callington Town Hall and an audience of more than 100 people.
For many of the young performers, productions such as this provide an opportunity to experience the excitement of performing in front of a large live audience, and it was rewarding for us to be able to provide the technical environment that supported them on stage.
The Result
Oz the Musical was a great example of the type of complete technical support HD Sound & Lighting can provide for youth theatre, musical productions and community performances.
By combining the venue’s existing facilities with a substantial amount of our own equipment, we were able to build a technical setup specifically around the needs of the production. From microphones, audio mixing and PA through to lighting, projection, fog and snow effects, our role was to make sure the technology supported the performers without distracting from them.
After around 65 hours of work behind the scenes, seeing a packed hall enjoying the finished production made all that preparation worthwhile. Most importantly, it was a pleasure to support such a hardworking group of young performers and help Vocal Footprint bring Oz the Musical to the stage.
